Listen to the music

Process

First, read through this complete section, so that you get an overview of the work you need to do.

  1. On your own:

You take part in the contest as a group. To find a group you introduce yourself and your music taste in a letter or e-mail to your classmates. In this letter:

    • You imagine yourself to be a singer or rapper. What would you sing about and why? Is there a message you'd like to tell your listeners?

    • You either mail it to your classmates or put it up on a wall so you can read each other's letters.

2. Group work:

After reading the letters, you make teams of four people who are interested in the same sort of music or even the same band or singer. Discuss the following:

    • Come to an agreement about which singer or band you are going to investigate together. Maybe you have to visit a few sites and show each other before you decide.

To find out about the lyrics of a band you can consult the internet: use a search machine like: google or go directly to the mtv site or www.lyfics.com and search for your band and the chosen lyrics. You can also go to home pages of your favorite band: Alicia Keys? Twarres? P.Diddy? Robbie Williams?

    • Discuss some first possible ideas for your presentation for the competition. How might you make your presentation so fantastic that you will have a chance of winning? Your final task is the presentation of your view on this band and what they sing. Presenting doesn't just mean written words.

    • As a group you can make a choice:

        • perform one of the songs and comment on the lyrics.

        • make a dance in which you express the contents of one of the songs.

        • make a poster (words and pictures) on which you show what this band is about, what they sing about etc.

        • make a video about your group or singer.

        • create a role play (e.g. a TV program about the group).

        • design your own homepage on which you express what you think about this singer.

        • any other original ideas? Discuss them with your teacher.

3. Gathering information (group work)

You are all now going to become experts in different areas of your band: their music, their lyrics, their background and their personalities. Each of you will take on one expert role:

4. Making the presentation (groupwork)

After you have gathered your information together, you will need to work on your presentation. Use the information you have all collected to create a fantastic, 3 to 5 minute presentation about your group or singer. Use one of the creative possibilities in step 2. Make sure that you all write or speak or sing English.

Good luck!
